CARY, N.C. (06/24/2015) The CEO Roundtable on Cancer has accredited the School District of Palm Beach County in West Palm Beach, FL with the CEO Cancer Gold StandardTM recognizing the District’s efforts to reduce the risk of cancer for its employees and covered family members.
The CEO Roundtable on Cancer, a nonprofit organization of health-minded CEOs, developed and administers the Gold Standard, an employee wellness framework based on taking concrete actions in five key areas to address cancer in the workplace. Today, more than four and a half million employees and family members are benefiting from the vision and leadership of nearly 200 private, non-profit, and government employers who have chosen to become Gold Standard accredited. The listing of accredited employers includes a diverse range of employers, including the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and a number of NCI-designated cancer centers.
“I hope the leadership and commitment of the School District of Palm Beach County will encourage other employers across all industries to become Gold Standard accredited,” said Christopher A. Viehbacher, chairman of the CEO Roundtable on Cancer.
To earn Gold Standard accreditation, an employer meets specific requirements in corporate culture and health benefits: establish policies and programs to reduce cancer risk by prohibiting tobacco use and supporting tobacco cessation efforts; promote physical activity, healthy nutrition and weight management; provide health insurance options that include detecting cancer at its earliest stages, access to quality care, and participation in clinical trials; promote employee awareness of these initiatives; and support the needs of cancer survivors in the workplace.
“We are leading the way in school district wellness in the state of Florida,” said Carlye Fabrikant, the district’s Wellness Coordinator. “We thank the CEO Roundtable on Cancer for recognizing the district’s efforts to promote healthier lifestyles to our employees, and look forward to sharing our successes with other employers in Palm Beach County and throughout Florida.”
In addition to NCI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16 NCI-designated cancer centers and more than 60 other hospitals have earned Gold Standard accreditation. CEOs from many industries are keenly aware of the life-improving impact they can have on health and controlling healthcare costs when they address cancer and other chronic diseases. Gold Standard employers include: Avis Budget Group, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Lowe’s, Aetna, State Farm, Hogan Lovells, Dell, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, SAS and many Blue Cross affiliates.
About The CEO Roundtable on Cancer
The CEO Roundtable on Cancer was founded in 2001, when former President George H.W. Bush challenged a group of executives to “do something bold and venturesome about cancer within your own corporate families.” The CEOs responded by creating and encouraging the widespread adoption of the CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ which calls for organizations to evaluate their health benefits and workplace culture and take extensive, concrete actions in five key areas of health and wellness to address cancer in the workplace.
